I am interested in the racial dynamics of public problems in American cities, with a specific focus on political accountability. I think about these issues in terms of what others have called "failure events," which I use to understand expectancy violations between black voters and their government.
I am currently preparing a book manuscript examining the racial differences that emerge in response to corruption scandals in local government. I draw on historical and contemporary cases of alleged wrongdoing (e.g., Marion Barry's 1990 drug arrest), and take a multi-methods approach to examine how race influences political judgments.
